2. Description :

This work traces back a query of how we should recognize the present. In physics world, it is the light that allows us to perceive objects visually. But we cannot know exactly what happens for the light to reach our retina from the reflection on objects. We just presume what happens by physical reasoning. And moreover, the images formed on retina will be still unidentified until we recognize what it is. Likewise, our recognition of matters needs time to complete, of which the width varies depending on situation. As a medium, different qualities of air and different memories of the past in our brain makes different time latency of recognition because the past memories are always involved with recognition of the present.

Then, what is happening during the time latency? This work considers this width of time as the present time. The images reflected on matters go through physically various levels of color refraction and formless images evolve continuously while color-refracted objects being concerned with memories of the past in our brain. It would be impossible to represent what happens clearly, but it seems that a certain of vital energy resides in between the pure perception of material and its recognition by humans. It is like volcanic activation which keeps revealing and creating new images at every time while being cross-faded with the past memories.

In this work, the energy is represented as color-refracted transformation which fades out if no movement of subjects is detected. And what we have already recognized is represented as black and white screen, which is what we think of as the present. But the width of time explained as above, which is what this work considers as the present, is represented as the energy-driven and dynamic deviation or refraction of colors and shapes. The title ‘Interruption’ shows the energy, residing in the present,  which transforms the pure perception of materials into the finalized image of recognition after the time latency. So, our recognition is always interrupted, and the whole stages of being interrupted happens during the width of time or time latency.

3. Installation :

Depending on how the structure of the venue is, different plans of installation can be made.

# 22 - 28 of Sep, 2017, Seojin Artspace, Seoul, South Korea

=> Two cameras were installed inside and outside the gallery. Subjects inside the gallery can control time-latency because the more the subjects move inside, two cameras take shots more frequently. And the camera inside the gallery is processed to lose the clear images from the subjects, while the other camera outside the gallery is processed to maintain them with different time lap to take shots.

# 23 Mar ~ 20 June, 2018, LaPomme Gallery, ChungJu, South Korea

=> One camera was installed, which is doing two different tasks of processing images as clearly recognizable and color-refracted silhouette at the same time.
